>>reporter:27 people were killed yesterday. most of them. children just 6 and 7 years old. we can now put names and faces to those killed at sandy hook elementary school. among them, 27-year- old first grade teacher, victoria soto. her family says she died trying to protect her students. robbie parker lost his daugter emilie. >> "she always had something kind to say about anybody. she is an incredible person and i am so blessed to be her dad." >>reporter: the state medical examiner said he believes all the children killed were first graders as police continue to search for evidence in every "crack and crevice" of the school, the community is trying to figure out just how to cope. " when tragedies like this occur, people often look for answers, an explanation of how this could have occurred. but the sad truth is, there are no answers. no good ones, anyway." "the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school is a stark contrast to the feel you get walking thru this picturesque town. it almost feels like a norman rockwell painting. in fact, there's been one homicide in the last ten years." >>reporter: police say 20- year-old adam lanza, seen here in a photo from 2005.killed his mother in her newtown home, then forced his way into the school friday, and opened

fire, killing children and adults. lanza's aunt says she never imagined he could do such a thing. he was different, he was quiet, nice kid, good kid. in a statement, lanza's family says they share the grief of the community and the nation. tonight the people of newtown connecticut are coming out in huge numbers he will also be speaking at a vigil that is all happening tomorrow. in newton, conn., torry dunnin.. >> to remember the victims of yesterday's tragedy. kron 4's alecia reid has the latest.alecia. >> vicki these are some of the facts we have so faraccording to the medical examiner.everyone was shot more than once with a semi automatic rifle, some at close range. six adults were killed, all of them women. and of the 20 children, 12 were girls and 8 of them boys. all between 6 and 7

years old.there were 3 guns found at the scene. one of them that was used. a lawn gun, known as a bushmaster. this sea of people came out tonight for a candle light vigil -- honoring 27 year old victoria soto, who died trying to save her students. people are calling the 1st grade teacher a herofor hiding her students in a closet and putting herself between them and the gunman. there were other vigils in newtown connecticut tonight. this one --- outside the saint rose of lima church. hundreds of people signed memorials. signs like god bless the families are all around the town. and flowers are constantly being brought to the memorial near sandy hook elementary school. a family friend says he knew something was terribly wrong when he couldn't get in touch with the parents of one of the victims. >> we felt something

unusual because they didn't respond on the phone call messages. last night basically they called us and 2 wordsour son is not with us anymore. >>reporter: the chief medical examiner calls it the worst case he's seen in his career while this close knit community searches for answers, they say right now is a time for them to comfort each other. >> i think coming to these memorials, i think it's being close from one family to another and just being there. you know, just hugs. i don't think there are any words. >> sot - we're coming together with love and support for those families who have suffered this terrible loss. we're a caring place, we will put our arms around those families and around each other. we will find a way to heal. >>reporter: right now they may not have the right words to console the families that are hurting, but they

>>reporter: stephanie and megan say something has to be done. >> the people who took the time out of their saturday to come here in the cold and rainy weather say that it was important to do so not only to remember those who were lost but to open a dialog and say they never want to see something like this happen again. i'm jeff bush in san francisco, kron four news. >> in the east bay. police and youth groups partnered up today and held a successful gun buyback program. following the aftermath of the connecticut school massacre. hundreds of cars lined up in oakland to trade their guns for cash. kron4's jeff pierce has the details. >> one hundred and twenty one, one hundred and twenty two, one hundred and twenty three, one hundred and twenty four. >>reporter: olois simmons of youth uprising counted the cars waiting to turn in guns for cash saturday afternoon in oakland. nearly two hundred cars with guns in their trunks waited hours

for the opportunity to get two hundred dollars for each gun for as many as three guns. it was one of the most succesful gun by back programs ever held in the city. >> one gun off the street is good but the whole back side of a paddy wagon is even better. >>reporter: that success was credited to youth uprising's ability to organize and promote the event beyond what a police department is able to achieve. >> we had young people as the voice of it we did out reach hand to hand in communities with community members reaching out to each other, you get a drastically different outcome then when you have the police reaching out. >>reporter: the oakland police department was more than pleased to process and take possession of those firearms. >> a good amount of firearms here pistols, rifles shotguns. this is an example of an assault weapon that was turned in. >>reporter: some waiting in the long line of cars questioned having an event at 82nd and bancroft. being on the street here for two and and half hours they're not serious about taking the weapons. why couldn't we have it at the coliseum in a big parking

chased after a teenage girl yesterday. the same suspect is believed to have followed two other females in the last couple of weeks. this is a sketch of the suspect. he is described as a white male, short in stature and in his 30's. the suspect has been seen driving a white utility- style van.with two doors in the back and tinted windows. the 13-year-old girl told police, the suspect followed her in his van and then got out of the car and started running after her. she ran to a neighbor's home and called police. the van was last scene heading south on monterey road. >> police say two people are dead in an apparent murder-suicide. it happened last night near the excalibur hotel's front entrance on the las vegas strip. police say a man shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself. the woman, who worked at the hotel, was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. no one else was hurt. police are trying to establish the relationship between the shooter and the victim. >> in china, police arrested a farmer who stabbed 22 children and one adult outside an elementary school on friday. min ying-jun is in custody. authorities

describe min as possibly being mentally ill. the children are said to be between the ages of six and 12. none of the died, however two children had to be sent to hospitals outside the country for better care. authorities have not identified a motive. there have been a string of similar assaults against school children in china. one in 20-10 killed nearly 20 kids and injured more than 50 other people. otpolice arrested an oklahoma teenager on charges he plotted to bomb and shoot students inside a high school campus auditorium yesterday. the same day of the connecticut elementary school shooting. an arrest report says 18-year-old sammie chavez tried to convince others to help him lure students into the auditorium, and then planned to chain the doors shut and start shooting. authorities say chavez threatened to kill students who would *not help him. other reports show chavez planned to detonate a bomb once police arrived. the school district says students were never in danger. chavez is being held on one-million dollars bond.

entire career, but it was when they told the parents -- all these parents were waiting for their children to come out. they thought that they were, you know, still alive. there's 20 parents that were just told that their children are dead. it was awful. >>reporter: one of the children who did not come home that day - six year old emilie parker. her father - robbie parker - stood before the cameras. he wanted to let others know about his little girl. and he talked of.forgiveness. >> my family is one of the families that lost a child yesterday in the sandy hook elementary shooting in connecticut. i have been contacted by so many people, agencies wanting to know how we are doing. and i thought that this would be the best way to share these feelings with everybody. first of all, i would like to offer our deepest

condolences to all the families that were the most impacted by this shooting is a horrific tragedy. all of all our hearts and prayers go out to them. this includes the family of the shooter. emily was bright, creative, and very loving. emily wanted to try new things. she loved to use her talents to touch others in she was an exceptional artist. she always said pencils, markers and she never missed an opportunity to draw a picture or make a card for those around her. i cannot count the number of times that emmeline noticed feel someone said or frustrated and would rush to find some paper. she would draw them a picture or write them an encouraging note. she was the type of person that would light up a room.

she always had something kind to say about anyone. and her laugh and the strength that the example that she showed off and her love cash was remarkable. she is an incredible person. i am so blessed to be heard dad. >> we're learning more about the victims, in friday's connecticut school massacre. like emilie, all of the 20 children were either six or seven years old. >> investigators in connecticut are searching for any possible clue about what may have motivated friday's massacre. they're combing sandy hook elementary school and the home of alleged shooter adam lanza's mother who police say the guns used in the shooting were registered to. at first reports were xsurfacing that said the mother was frequented shooting ranges. now authorities still investigation say that is untrue. just recently police announced they found evidence of a motive at the family home. but have not gone into detail.

>> shortly after friday's horrific shootings, police and swat teams descended on en it's closed off by police. >>reporter: and investigators are now suggesting that they are piecing together information leading to possible answers about how and why this happened. lieutenant paul vance of the connecticut state police saying, in his words, "good evidence" is being recovered -- but he did not go into detail. in terms of the weapons used, we do know that there were three weapons recovered at the scene of the shooting, near the suspect's body. there were two handguns and a semi-automatic rifle. cnn has been reporting that those guns were purchased by his mother, nancy lanza. there's not much we know about nancy lanza. we spoke to a neighbor earlier in the day, and she said that she
